Discography
Procedure Description:
A discogram is an x-ray test that shows the structure of a disc and is used to clarify whether that disc is the reason for pain. It will allow your doctor to see annular tears, scarring, disc bulges and changes in the nucleus of your disc(s).
Duration
30-60 minutes for the injection. You will be asked to wait up to an additional 60 minutes after the injection before going home.
Follow-up Care
No driving for 12 hours. You may resume previous activities as directed. No restrictions on what you eat or drink. You may have increased pain for one or two days. You may resume your pain medication(s) as directed.
Patient Preparation
Nothing solid to eat or drink four hours prior to your procedure. If your injection is in the afternoon, you may have an early, light breakfast and then no solids prior to your procedure. Bring your MRI with you. DO NOT take any pain medication(s) on the day of your appointment unless directed otherwise. You may take your other prescribed medications; however, if you are DIABETIC, TAKE ASPIRIN OR OTHER ANTICOAGULANTS (I.E. COUMADIN also known as WARFARIN) call the Pain Clinic for further information. You must have someone with you to drive you home.
Potential Adverse Effects:
Call the pain clinic immediately if you experience fever, difficulty walking, increased pain – (longer than two days), difficulty urinating or trouble controlling bowel movements, or increased weakness or numbness in the back or legs.
