CIWA Protocol

Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment Protocols for Alcohol, Sedative, and /or Hypnotic Drugs

The CIWA Protocol is an attempt to assess an individual's withdrawal from physically addictive substances by assigning a numerical score to each of several physical signs and symptoms, such as Nausea & Vomiting, Tremor, Sweating, Tactile, Auditory, and Visual Disturbances, Orientation, Agitation, and Headache, as well as measurement of Blood Pressure and Heart Rate. Administration and dosage of drugs (such as benzodiazepines) to treat withdrawal is subsequently based on the patient score, determined at periodic intervals.

A CIWA Protocol summary sheet is available on each Nursing Station; a copy of the assessment is kept in the chart of each patient undergoing withdrawal therapy.
